Hydrology and Environmental Engineering ENG715

Introduction

This unit gives an introduction to rock mechanics and its application in controlling rock mass instability and reinforcing rock mass by design appropriate support system for both surface and underground excavations. The syllabus consists of two components, i.e. fundamental rock mechanics and rock engineering. The fundamental rock mechanics part covers rock materials and rock masses; field and laboratory procedures for determining rock material properties; rock mass classification system; intact rock and rock mass failure criteria; stress analysis; stability analysis of surface and underground excavations; and legislative requirements. The rock engineering part focuses on the application of rock mechanics and includes an introduction to ground support elements; design and specification of ground control systems; shotcrete and surface support systems; quality control for ground control systems; risk assessment and risk management processes; development of ground control management plans; and legislative requirements for ground control.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (refer to How do I withdraw from a unit? for more information).

Unit census dates currently displaying for 2024 are indicative and subject to change. Finalised census dates for 2024 will be available from the 1st October 2023. Note census date cutoff is 11.59pm AEST (AEDT during October to March).

About Census Dates

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyse pipe networks in terms of steady flows and heads, unsteady water hammer and surge flows in pipelines, free surface waves, hydraulic jumps and tidal bores, and varied channel flow and friction.
  • Design flood routing and management systems on the basis of an in-depth understanding of meteorological prediction and the hydrologic cycle from the precipitation to evaporation, infiltration and groundwater processes using unit hydrographs and rational runoff equation
  • Apply commonly used environmental tools for environmental design, monitoring, control and remediation
  • Review the social, economic and institutional factors affecting environmental engineering practice
