Introduction

This unit gives an introduction to rock mechanics and its application in controlling rock mass instability and reinforcing rock mass by design appropriate support system for both surface and underground excavations. The syllabus consists of two components, i.e. fundamental rock mechanics and rock engineering. The fundamental rock mechanics part covers rock materials and rock masses; field and laboratory procedures for determining rock material properties; rock mass classification system; intact rock and rock mass failure criteria; stress analysis; stability analysis of surface and underground excavations; and legislative requirements. The rock engineering part focuses on the application of rock mechanics and includes an introduction to ground support elements; design and specification of ground control systems; shotcrete and surface support systems; quality control for ground control systems; risk assessment and risk management processes; development of ground control management plans; and legislative requirements for ground control.

Learning Outcomes

1. Classify rock masses according to common classification schemes such as RMR and Q systems and determine the physical and mechanical properties of rock masses.

2. Predict the behaviour of rocks and rock masses by stress analysis and various rock strength criteria available in rock mechanics.

3. Design ground support systems for both surface and underground excavations to satisfy their bearing capacity and serviceability requirements
