Introduction

This first year mathematics unit provides a broad introduction to the fundamental mathematical operations and methods (differentiation, integration and partial differentiation) and mathematical objects (vectors) needed in engineering and science. We initiate themes of mathematical modelling which are most important in connection with practical problems. This unit lays a solid foundation for more advanced mathematics undertaken in semester two and higher years.

Learning Outcomes

  • Use function algebra to represent functions as tables, graphs, and mathematical expressions and have developed skills in using functions as models for real-life behaviour.
  • State the basic properties of geometric vectors including products of up to three vectors, and apply the results to the geometry of curves and the motion of objects.
  • Calculate derivatives of functions involving polynomials, exponentials, logarithms, trigonometric functions and inverses. Use them to solve problems involving rates of change, maximum and minimum and approximation of functions.
  • Calculate integrals and use integrals in applications such as Simpson’s rule.
  • Calculate partial derivatives and apply the chain rules.

Teaching Pattern

Newnham Campus:  3 hours Lectures weekly, 1 hour Tutorial weekly

Cradle Coast Campus: Lectures will be delivered offline, with weekly on-campus tutorials.

Cradle Coast Campus Students:  We strongly recommend to all students (in particular Cradle Coast campus students) that to get the best outcome of the unit, you should physically attend the lectures in the Newnham (Launceston) campus.  However, all lectures are recorded and will be made available on MyLO (subject to availability).  For missed recordings due to external factors beyond the lecturer's control, all reasonable efforts will be made to rectify the situation arising from this.
