Introduction

This first year mathematics unit builds on the fundamentals learnt in Mathematics I and provides students of science and engineering an introduction to those areas of mathematics which are most important in connection with practical problems. We will initiate the themes of mathematical modelling beginning with direct applications of theory and methods (complex numbers, matrices, differential equations, series and probability and statistics). You will develop numerical techniques where appropriate and use modern mathematical software packages such as MAPLE to investigate less tractable problems in calculus, linear algebra and modelling. This unit lays a solid foundation for more advanced mathematics undertaken in higher years.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the algebra and geometry of complex numbers and carry out calculations involving complex numbers in polar and exponential form.
  • Use matrix algebra, especially in solving systems of linear equations and calculating eigenvalues and eigenvectors.
  • Solve first order differential equations and second order linear differential equations and see how they can be applied to modelling of simple physical phenomena.
  • Explain the basic properties of sequences and series, and the role of series in the estimation of functions and the calculation of Taylor series.
  • Apply probability distributions, statistical tests and confidence intervals for designing and analysing experimental data. Understand statistical methodology and apply it to the solution of science and engineering problems.

Newnham Campus:  4 hours Lectures weekly, 1 hour Tutorial weekly

Cradle Coast Campus: Lectures will be delivered offline, with weekly on-campus tutorials.

Cradle Coast Campus Students:  We strongly recommend to all students (in particular Cradle Coast campus students) that to get the best outcome of the unit, you should physically attend the lectures in the Newnham (Launceston) campus.  However, all lectures are recorded and will be made available on MyLO (subject to availability).  For missed recordings due to external factors beyond the lecturer's control, all reasonable efforts will be made to rectify the situation arising from this.
