Introduction

Engineers come across many different materials in their daily activities. This unit is designed to provide the students with the level of knowledge required for understanding engineering materials. JEE125 Materials Technology provides understanding of the chemistry, metallurgy and properties of engineering materials, and the connection between structure, processing and properties of a range of materials including metal alloys, ceramics and polymers, through theory and lab work. Emphasis is placed on actual case histories of material performance in practice, and the analysis of the causes of failure. The basic knowledge gained in this unit can be used as a foundation to be built upon in later stages of the Engineering Degree program.

Newnham Campus:  3 hours lectures weekly, 1 hour tutorial weekly, Practicals as advised.

Cradle Coast Campus: Lectures will be delivered offline, with weekly on-campus tutorials.

Cradle Coast Campus Students:  We strongly recommend to all students (in particular Cradle Coast campus students) that to get the best outcome of the unit, you should physically attend the lectures in the Newnham (Launceston) campus.  However, all lectures are recorded and will be made available on MyLO (subject to availability).  For missed recordings due to external factors beyond the lecturer's control, all reasonable efforts will be made to rectify the situation arising from this.
