Track Maintenance and Applications JEE154

Rozelle - Sydney

Introduction

There are many types of defects which inevitably occur in railway track, and identifying and rectifying those defects is what maintenance is all about. The most critical defects occur within the steel rails and insufficient awareness of such defects has led to many train disasters over the decades. Knowing how to detect and classify track defects and applying good maintenance process is essential in track engineering as is the knowledge of how those defects may affect the longevity of track components. Planning and managing maintenance needs careful attention to ensure the safety and operational requirements of the railway are sustained, while at the same time keeping costs to a realistic minimum.
