Introduction

The design and analysis of engineering fluid systems and marine vehicles requires knowledge of the principles and behaviour of moving and stationary fluids. This unit provides students with knowledge and understanding of fluid flow phenomena via flow visualization, theory and practical exercises addressing the continuity and force-momentum equations and relevant hydrodynamic coefficients for incompressible fluid flow. It builds on the basic engineering knowledge gained in year one.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the mathematical formulation of the basic laws governing laminar fluid flow kinematics and dynamics and be able to discuss the assumptions that underlie them.
  • Make common measurements of static and moving fluids, including pressure and velocity measurements, using standard devices.
  • Apply dimensional analysis to given engineering situations, and apply dynamic similarity laws to scale models and full size components.
  • Describe pumping and piping systems, including selecting appropriate system components and pump matching.
  • Describe fluid flow around engineering shapes, including the phenomena of boundary layers and wakes, and calculate their lift and drag characteristics.
