Introduction
This unit provides an introduction to fundamental aspects of the rational engineering approaches and issues which influence the construction of marine vessels, on-board systems and offshore structures including materials. The unit will serve sympathetic approaches of the procedures, processes, tools, techniques, strategies and tactics used for managing on-site construction and production operations in a multi-tasking team environment. This unit further develops soft skills gained in the first year and project management in the second year. Moreover, the unit will cover corrosion, heat treatments in steel, quality and safety related issues to understand its relevance for theory and practise employed during construction and production of maritime infrastructures.

Learning Outcomes
ILO 1 Demonstrate a basic knowledge of regulatory, practical and economic constraints on design including identifying issues regarding the methodology and efficiency of production for any vessel or structures.
ILO 2 Recognise the concepts of ship production systems and main hardware elements of shipyards and integral processes within production line and associated current technologies.
ILO 3 Describe elementary knowledge of construction, installation operations of offshore structures.
ILO 4 Explain the principles of quality management, sustainability and ethics during the construction including risks management, meetings and negotiations with stakeholders and make key decisions during the planning and execution phases of a project.
ILO 5 Analyse the qualitative and quantitative properties of electrolytic cells and heat treatments in steel. Apply electrochemical knowledge to recognising and controlling the different types of corrosion encountered in engineering structures.
