Introduction

This unit is an intermediate-level unit that introduces the students to the industry standards, codes and analysis techniques used in the design of fixed, steel and concrete offshore structures. In addition, students are exposed to experimental and analytical geotechnical techniques used in the classification of soils and in the design and analysis of foundations. The unit builds heavily on the knowledge gained in Mechanics of Solids and Materials Technology and provides the foundations for design projects conducted in advanced units.

Learning Outcomes

  • Establish a design of structural steel members of a fixed offshore structure.
  • Apply appropriate engineering analysis and design methods for reinforced concrete beam structures.
  • Correctly select and apply experimental and analytical methods to identify, characterize and classify soil and concrete material properties in accordance to industry standards and procedures.
  • Evaluate a suitable design of structural foundations and anchoring systems for given soil and loading condition.
