Introduction
To expose students to practical design issues and processes and to enable development of conceptual, analytical and project-planning skills required for ship design with a particular emphasis on global structural design and regulatory constraints. The unit develops further design skills acquired in Ship Design (Ship) and permits the application of knowledge acquired in Resistance and Propulsion and Seakeeping and Manoeuvring to a rule-governed design project centred on a moderate-sized vessel. The unit also consolidates knowledge acquired in Mechanics of Solids and Structural Analysis and demonstrates its practical application to a ship's design.

Learning Outcomes
ILO 1 Demonstrate an understanding of practical issues with respect to selection and design of a vessel’s key features, structure and integral systems.
ILO 2 Design a hullform and efficient structure compliant with practical operational and performance requirements and appropriate codes and regulations.
ILO 3 Produce an abbreviated suite of supporting design documentation exhibiting a rational engineering approach to a preliminary design.
ILO 4 Develop an appropriate project management regime and associated tools to facilitate efficient design practice.
