Launceston

Introduction

This unit applies thermodynamic principles to more advanced systems. Students will develop an advanced understanding of energy conversion systems, with emphasis on energy efficiency. Systems studied will include liquefaction, compression, air conditioning, hydraulics and combustion.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units.

TNE Program units special approval requirements.

* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see withdrawal dates explained for more information).

About Census Dates

Learning Outcomes

ILO 1 Explain the basic principles of hydraulic systems and perform calculations for common hydraulic components used in maritime industry.

ILO 2 Explain the principles of reciprocating gas compressors. Make calculations of power and efficiency for multi-stage compressors.

ILO 3 Explain thermodynamic cycles of various liquefaction systems including a refrigeration system. Describe the factors that affect their performance and carry out performance calculations.

ILO 4 Describe the thermodynamics of moist atmospheric air. Calculate cooling and heating loads for air conditioning processes.

ILO 5 Explain the basic principles of combustion processes, including exhaust emissions. Estimate flame temperatures with dissociation.
