Oil and gas production involves a number of surface unit operations between the wellhead and the point of custody transfer or transport from the production facilities. The unit is designed to introduce offshore oil and gas production/processing operations. You will explore the theories and principles behind the production/processing of oil and/or gas for safe and economical storage and/or transport by pipelines. This unit will focus on a specific range of topics such as multicomponent/multiphase flow behaviour, emulsions, hydrate chemistry, dehydration, separator sizing and design etc. This is an advance unit that builds on the knowledge gained in Thermal Engineering and Fluid Dynamics in the previous year.

Learning Outcomes

ILO 1 Explain the principles of oil and gas processing operations, export pipelines and able to interpret the design, layout and arrangement of field processing.

ILO 2 Perform basic phase, flow and separation calculations involving oil and gas streams including multiphase, multicomponent, non-newtonian, non-ideal mixtures at high pressure and varying temperature.

ILO 3 Explain emulsion behaviour, hydrate chemistry, acid mitigation and dehydration processes.

ILO 4 Model simple processes used in oil and gas industry using computer aided software.

ILO 5 Demonstrate knowledge of safety elements and safety regulations used in the offshore oil and gas industry.
