Introduction

Advanced Maritime Structures is an advanced and specialised unit aimed at furthering students’ knowledge and understanding of ship structures. By applying the knowledge gained in previous units such as Mechanics of Solids and Analysis of Machines & Structures and combining it with the concepts gained in Applied Ship Design, the students are introduced to advanced theories and analysis techniques applicable to the detail and global design and analysis of metallic and fibre-reinforced plastic ship structure. Special focus will be given to non-linear structural behaviour such as local and global instabilities (buckling), permanent deformations (plasticity) and dynamic response to cyclic and transient loads (vibration). The student will be expected to apply these advanced analysis and design and methodologies to meet client requirements and to c0mply with regulatory and industry specific constraints by formulating innovative solutions with intellectual independence.

Learning Outcomes

ILO 1 Use creativity, intellectual independence to select and apply the most suitable analysis and design methodologies in order to produce a structural design solution that satisfies the requirements of a client brief for a maritime engineering design project at a detailed design level.

ILO 2 Demonstrate and apply knowledge of regulatory, practical and economic constraints in the detail structural design of ocean vehicles with a special emphasis in sustainable design considerations.

ILO 3 Effectively combine the use of structural design, research, teamwork and written communication skills to investigate, report and assess the condition of an new or existing structure, in accordance with industry standards and codes of practice.

ILO 4 Demonstrate an understanding of sustainability, engineering ethics and human factors in the structural design context by examining the engineer’s obligations to the environment, the society, their clients, and to the profession.
