Courses & Units
Advanced Maritime Structures JEE416
Introduction
Advanced Maritime Structures is an advanced and specialised unit aimed at furthering students’ knowledge and understanding of ship structures. By applying the knowledge gained in previous units such as Mechanics of Solids and Analysis of Machines & Structures and combining it with the concepts gained in Applied Ship Design, the students are introduced to advanced theories and analysis techniques applicable to the detail and global design and analysis of metallic and fibre-reinforced plastic ship structure. Special focus will be given to non-linear structural behaviour such as local and global instabilities (buckling), permanent deformations (plasticity) and dynamic response to cyclic and transient loads (vibration). The student will be expected to apply these advanced analysis and design and methodologies to meet client requirements and to c0mply with regulatory and industry specific constraints by formulating innovative solutions with intellectual independence.

Note
Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Key Dates
Study Period | Start date | Census date | WW date | End date |
---|---|---|---|---|
Semester 1 | 21/2/2022 | 22/3/2022 | 11/4/2022 | 29/5/2022 |
* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (refer to How do I withdraw from a unit? for more information).
Unit census dates currently displaying for 2022 are indicative and subject to change. Finalised census dates for 2022 will be available from the 1st October 2021. Note census date cutoff is 11.59pm AEST (AEDT during October to March).
Learning Outcomes
- Use creativity, intellectual independence to select and apply the most suitable analysis and design methodologies in order to produce a structural design solution that satisfies the requirements of a client brief for a maritime engineering design project at a detailed design level.
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of regulatory, practical and economic constraints in the detail structural design of ocean vehicles with a special emphasis in sustainable design considerations.
- Effectively combine the use of structural design, research, teamwork and written communication skills to investigate, report and assess the condition of an new or existing structure, in accordance with industry standards and codes of practice.
- Demonstrate an understanding of sustainability, engineering ethics and human factors in the structural design context by examining the engineer’s obligations to the environment, the society, their clients, and to the profession.
