Introduction

Underwater Vehicle Technology is an advanced and specialist unit aimed at developing the students’ knowledge and understanding of naval architecture theories, concepts and principles required for the design torpedo-shaped underwater vehicles. This particular shape is the classic hull form used in modern underwater vehicles ranging from Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to military submarines. Topics will cover the specifics of hull form and pressure hull design, hydrostatics and hydrodynamic requirements, on-board systems and power and propulsion constraints specific to underwater vehicles. Gained knowledge of these topics will be directly applied through the design, construction and performance evaluation of a modular underwater vehicle capable of executing a set of predetermined tasks.

Learning Outcomes

ILO 1 Demonstrate and apply a technical understanding of historical and current roles performed by each specific type of underwater vehicle, in both the military and civilian context, to interpret, analyse and evaluate client briefs, mission requirements and project proposals specific to the design, construction and operation of underwater vehicles.

ILO 2 Create the conceptual design for an underwater vehicle that meets client requirements and industry/defence specific criteria by applying specialist knowledge of relevant naval architecture theory and design principles combined with project management skills and teamwork.

ILO 3 Apply specific knowledge of integrated system design to ensure an appropriate operation of all the on-board systems that are critical for the successful operation of an underwater vehicle.

ILO 4 Effectively combine the use of teamwork, oral and written communication skills, conventional design tools and industry specific software to create the design drawings, digital models and technical documents required to report and evaluate the performance of an underwater vehicle, at a conceptual level, in accordance with industry standards and codes of practice.

ILO 5 Demonstrate an understanding of wellbeing, sustainability, engineering ethics and human factors in the underwater vehicle design and operation context by examining the engineer’s obligations to the environment, the society, their clients, and to the profession.
