Introduction

This unit introduces students to maritime hydrodynamics and Computational Fluid Dynamics to solve hydrodynamics problems.    On successful completion of the unit, students should be able to:

  • Develop and apply the mathematical formulation of the basic laws governing laminar, turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer.
  • Explain the various approaches and techniques utilised in CFD.
  • Develop appropriate mesh domains for CFD investigations into typical maritime vehicles, structures, and systems to obtain accurate and stable simulations.
  • Solve and refine steady state and transient flow problems relevant to maritime engineering involving turbulence, using commercial CFD packages.
  • Critically analyse the results using relevant theory and experimental data to obtain and explain the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic coefficients and characteristics of marine vehicles, structures, and systems.
