Introduction
This unit provides students with the principles and practices necessary for the planning and management of marine protected areas (MPAs). The unit syllabus addresses the types and roles of MPAs, planning and administration, processes for establishing an MPA and management of MPAs. Students learn to develop and recommend objectives critical for the establishment of an MPA, to identify appropriate strategies for balancing conservation and ecologically sustainable development and to critically appraise the efficacy of protected areas.
