Introduction

The purpose of this unit is to make students aware of the options to reduce the impacts of fishing on the marine environment. This advanced unit provides the student with the opportunity to assess the impacts of fishing on the marine environment and to recommend methods to promote responsible fishing practices within the fishing industry.

  • describe the drivers for responsible fishing
  • critically appraise the ecological impacts of fishing on the marine environment(such as bycatch, seabed interactions and ghost fishing)
  • measure and model the selectivity of fishing gears
  • undertake a strategic assessment of fishing activities within selected fisheries
  • recommend mitigation measures to minimise the impacts of fishing
