Introduction
This unit involves comprehending, analysing and evaluating the processes and practices which bring shipowners and cargo owners together in a contractual relationship for carrying cargo. This business is usually facilitated by intermediaries called brokers. The aim of this unit is to provide you with a comprehensive sketch of the concepts, principles and practice which underpin the commercial employment of ships under charter arrangements.

- describe the role of brokers and agents operating in shipping markets and discuss their legal and ethical responsibilities
- analyse charterparties and discuss the obligations, liabilities and entitlements of shipowners and charterers
- estimate financial returns from prospective alternative voyages of a ship and determine the most suitable option.
