This unit introduces you to the concepts, applications and practice of management. You will be introduced to the fundamentals of management that are vital for the successful operation of any business. You will be exposed to a widely accepted body of knowledge, introducing you to contemporary issues in the practice of management. From various journals and publications the opinions and experiences of both practitioners and academics will be emphasised.

The unit is designed to be suitable for students at different stages in their careers and at different levels in the organisation. If you are new to a management or supervisory position this unit will provide you with grounding in management. If you are already employed in a management position, you may acquire some new ideas, refresh your memory or even affirm that you are doing things correctly. At present, you may not be employed in a management or supervisory position. In that case, consider the unit as advanced preparation for a period when you may be assigned a managerial or supervisory position.

The specific content of the unit has been designed to be sufficiently broad and comprehensive to prepare you for a range of different business settings. You will notice that the unit has been named Management, not specifically Maritime Management. The principles and practice of management are applied across all industries. To make the material as relevant as possible you will be asked to use your organisation as a focus to answer activities and questions.
