Port Management and Strategy JNB616
Introduction
This unit aims to expose you to contemporary management practices in ports. The design of this unit is suited to meet the needs of students at different stages in their careers and at different levels in their organisations. You will learn about the commercial functions of ports, port governance, the role of ports in global supply chains, port development, finance and pricing, port performance management, port competition and marketing, port environmental management, safety and security, application of technology in ports, and strategic port planning. Challenges related to these issues faced by ports and relevant strategies adopted for responding to them are also included.
Knowledge from other units such as JNB522 Business Logistics and JNB624 Supply Chain Management can be brought into play as you go through this study. For example, logistics and supply chain management has changed the role of a port leading to changes in port management, operation and strategies. This unit also links to JNB739 Strategic Management as strategic management skills can be applied to port planning.
