Shipboard Operations II JND288

Introduction

On completion of this unit, students will have the knowledge and skills required to monitor the seaworthiness of the vessel, application of vessels construction principles, coordinate the vessel's planned maintenance system ensuring the vessel's watertight integrity is maintained and gain a good understanding of the vessel's certification process. The student will also have a good understanding of the function and operation of machinery and emergency equipment and understand the responsibilities and duties of engine room personnel.

This unit builds on the knowledge gained in year 1 and meets the learning outcomes set out in Table A -II/1 of STCW 2010 and detailed in the Maritime Training Package MAR50315.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate adequate knowledge and understanding of the means to monitor compliance with legislative requirements and emergency response procedures.
  • Demonstrate adequate knowledge and understanding of the principal structural members of a ship and associated terminology, seaworthiness, watertight integrity, docking, survey, Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS), inspection and reporting of defects and damages to cargo spaces, hatch covers and ballast tanks.
  • Demonstrate adequate knowledge and understanding of the function and operation of machinery, emergency equipment, duties and responsibilities of the engine room personnel, requirements to ensure pollution prevention compliance and enhanced surveys.
