Introduction
Students completing this unit will identify the considerable changes that have taken place in shipbuilding practice with the development of technology and the changes in the rules governing their construction and operation. The unit further focusses on the knowledge and skills needed to maintain the vessel’s seaworthiness in line with Class recommendations. It also incorporates a ship master’s perspective in understanding the operation of the main propulsion and auxiliary machinery and responding to consequences in the event of machinery malfunction.
The unit will build on the knowledge attained in Shipboard Operations II of the second year of studies. This unit meets the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the Maritime Training Package MAR 60315, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A- II/2 of the STCW code

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge of the process of shipbuilding and analyse the effect of dynamic and static stresses on the ship’s structure.
- Identify the general arrangement of various types of ships and follow correct procedures for the repair/maintenance of the vessel, including preparing the vessel for dry-docking and undocking.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the various international conventions to which Australia is signatory and recognise the role of the Port State to ensure that vessels comply with them.
- Identify the role of stabilising systems, thrusters and anti-heeling systems on vessels.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principal operational characteristics of power generation machinery options and propulsion system options and their selection in relation to matching to vessel type and vessel function.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principal operational characteristics of power generation, propulsion, cargo and hotel auxiliary systems and machinery components.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principal characteristics and requirements of environmental protection, life support and shipboard emergency system options and arrangements in relation to vessel type.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the procedures for the control and evaluation of machinery system operational performance and efficiency in relation to energy recovery measures and improved vessel fuel economy, performance and safety.

Teaching Pattern | Blended delivery in the form of lectures and online learning supplemented with consolidated face to face learning and practical training in simulated ship environment towards the end of semester Students attending classes and students electing to study on flexible mode will follow the same class time table.
