Advanced Ship Stability JND318

Introduction

Controlling and managing the stability of the vessel when at sea and in port to ensure the safety of the vessel, its cargo and crew is a prime domain of responsibility of the ship's officer. This unit focuses on the conceptual knowledge and practical application of ship stability on commercial vessels.

A student completing this unit will be able to apply various stability concepts addressing aspects in statical and dynamical stability, ensuring that regulatory recommendations are met and that the vessel maintains its stability under all conditions of its operation. It is further designed to blend the theoretical concepts with real life experience; using typical shipboard stability applications. The unit will build up on the knowledge attained in Ship Stability & Seaworthiness unit of the Watchkeeper study and is a core unit of the final year. This unit meet the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the Maritime Training Package MAR60315, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-II/2 of the STCW code.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret and apply concepts of geometric parameters associated with ship’s hydro-static data
  • Assess vessel’s draft and stability during cargo operations, dry-docking and damaged conditions.
  • Analyze the factors influencing the dynamical stability of the vessel and their effect on trim and stability
  • Interpret and evaluate compliance with relevant national and international regulations
  • Demonstrate the ability to compute transverse and longitudinal stability of the vessel using real life shipboard instruments and correlate the outcomes against manual calculation.
