Shipping Business and Law JND322
Introduction
The student completing this unit will be able to understand and be aware of the international
and national legal framework within which a shipmaster is expected to exercise
professional judgement in the commercial operation of a vessel. The unit covers the master’s rights, duties and obligations, at law and in practice towards the ship owners, charterers, port states, crew and other stakeholders as well as the obligations for the safety of the vessel, cargo, the environment and crew.
This unit meet the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the
Maritime Training Package MAR60315, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table AII/2 of the STCW code.

Learning Outcomes
- Interpret the principal sources of national and international law in merchant shipping and examine how they relate to the operation and management of merchant vessels in the perspective of a ship’s master
- Operate the vessel as required by the legal, commercial, and operational characteristics of different markets of vessel employment and management
- Identify the terminology and economics of different types of insurance arrangements and complying with their requirements
- Apply the legal principles associated with pilotage, salvage, and towage
