Introduction
This unit introduces students to the best management practices for dealing with the ship-shore interface and will provide the skills and knowledge necessary to assume an operations management role. Topics covered include: the role of port authorities and legislative matters; the regulations and codes governing vessel operations within a port; Harbour Master's powers and Harbour Master's Directions; the technical aspects of port operations, including mooring, berthing and anchoring operations, cargo handling equipment and storage, handling and transfer of various cargo types; environmental and safety aspects of port operations. Assessment | Assignment 1 - 50% - Application of knowledge to manage the ship-shore interface in harbours and related port operations. Assignment 2 - 50% - Requiring students to apply their knowledge to develop a management process for harbour operations within a stipulated region and operational theatre. (Note: this may be replaced with an appropriate case study). |
