Electrical Electronics and Control Systems JNE231

Introduction

This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills to understanding the operation, construction, and characteristics of ship's electrical and electronic systems, including the control systems, to enable safe and efficient operation of a commercial vessel and its machinery at an operational level. This includes design specifications, trouble shooting, maintenance and repair, and communication with external stakeholders. This unit meet the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the current Maritime Training Package, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A-III/1 of the STCW code.

  • Explain safety precautions and management for High Voltage (>1000V) and Low Voltage (<1000V) in marine systems at an operational level for watchkeeping marine engineers
  • Solve and explain DC an AC electrical circuit problems associated with electronics, electrical circuitry and variable frequency drives on board a vessel.
  • Explain the application of digital electronics in control system for a marine system.
  • Demonstrate and explain working operational knowledge of control principles and process control system applied to marine systems.
