Advanced Electro-technology JNE311
Introduction
This unit provides students with the theoretical knowledge required to solve practical problems encountered in marine electrical engineering. The unit focuses on solving both DC and AC electrical circuit problems. It also covers magnetic circuits and power generation theory. A student completing this unit will be able to apply the knowledge gained to calculate power requirements for ships installations such as generators and transformers. Students will be able to understand the theory applied to RL, RC and RLC circuits. The unit will instil knowledge required to manage the electrical power plant of a ship from a management level perspective. This unit meet the requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out by the Maritime Training Package MAR60120, the STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and Table A- III/2 of the STCW code.

Learning Outcomes
- Apply electrical laws and principles for solving DC electrical circuit problems involving Resistors, Capacitors and Inductors.
- Analyse magnetic circuits and demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of electromagnetic induction.
- Solve problems associated with alternating current circuits incorporating combinations of Resistive, Inductive and Capacitive elements.
- Apply the complex number methodology to solve alternating current circuit problems involving Resistors, Capacitors, and Inductors.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the operation and testing of single-phase and three-phase transformers.
- Use numeric calculations to demonstrate comprehension of three-phase systems, including problems on power, voltage and current relationships in both star and delta connected systems.
