Introduction

In the shipping industry in particular, the liquefied gas tanker sector is currently focusing more on the Safe operation of gas carriers.

This unit has been designed to provide the learner with the required basic knowledge and skills to contribute for the safe operation of a Liquefied Gas tanker by understanding the hazards and taking precautions to prevent them. Also this unit provides the basic knowledge to respond to various emergencies one may face on board ship including firefighting.

This unit covers the mandatory minimum standard of compliance requirements prescribed by Regulation V/1, Table A-V/1-2-1 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.

  • Understand the basic properties of Liquefied Gases and analyse the importance of Design and Operational principles of gas tankers.
  • Identify the Gas cargo hazards and take appropriate actions in accordance with the safe working practise
  • Apply theoretical and practical knowledge of best practice in responding to various emergencies including fighting the Gas fire
