Introduction

This unit is based on the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Model Course titled
'Marine Environmental Awareness'. The lectures present knowledge of the diversity and
functional significance of marine life and how this environment can be adversely impacted by
industrial and transport technologies. This information creates an understanding of the
importance of maritime industry regulatory frameworks, the roles of major industry players
and the need for compliance with IMO environmental protection Protocols and Conventions.
The leadership role undertaken in protecting environments from pollution, through sound and
sustainable shipping practices, is work-shopped to emphasise the operations and operations
engineering functions of marine, maritime-related plant, processes and personnel.
