This unit provides students with an opportunity to be engaged in a research or design project in a laboratory or field setting in STEM. The aim of the unit is to provide an experience that will immerse students in the culture of a research or design group in STEM and enable students to gain insights and skills associated with working effectively, under supervision, on an authentic research or design activity. The project outputs will be presented as a poster or equivalent to an academic audience.
This Introduction to Research and Design Experience unit consists of 6 to 8 weeks (ca. 300 hours) project activity, or equivalent.

- Plan a research or design project in response to a predetermined problem in STEM supported by relevant information
- Implement a predetermined design and method to undertake a project under the guidance of a supervisor
- Complete a research or design project through working effectively, responsibly, safely and ethically in an individual or team context
- Collect, accurately record, interpret scientific or design data derived from own investigation or provided by others
- Communicate your research or design project results to an academic audience as a conference poster or equivalent
