Introduction

This unit consists of an independent research project in any of the disciplines of the College of Science and Engineering. It will involve approximately 130 hours planning, conducting, analysing and reporting on a research topic negotiated between the student and the supervising academic. To enroll, the student should first approach suitable supervisors and the Unit Coordinator to discuss projects. Enrolment is only possible with approval of the Unit Coordinator and supervisor. Students will not usually be considered without satisfactory completion of two relevant intermediate (2nd year) units.

  • Manage and effectively implement an appropriate research method for the selected project, through working safely and ethically under academic guidance
  • Collect and accurately record scientific data
  • Interpret scientific data logically and draw sound conclusions from those data
  • Report scientific results, placing these into the context of the current state of scientific understanding and explaining their wider relevance, in the form of a formal scientific publication.

Teaching Pattern

No formal classes. Attendance as negotiated between student and supervisor/s.  The student will spend approximately 130 hours planning, conducting, analysing and reporting on the project. In most cases, students will be working on campus and/or at some existing research site.
