Introduction

Studios in the major of the Bachelor of Architecture & Built Environments focus on the development and refinement of conceptual, analytical and technical skills through applied problem-based learning in a diverse range of real-world contexts. In second year, studios focus on the synthesis of foundational design skills within targeted applied contexts emphasising diverse approaches to design inquiry and the extension of skills in critical evaluation and professional communication.


Spatial Typologies focuses on strategic approaches to design inquiry emphasising spatial organisation and planning and evaluation of building performance. Employing analytical design thinking techniques, you will identify similarities, differences and patterns in spatial typologies of historical and contemporary precedents related to particular programs and different climatic contexts. Working from a given project brief, you will apply typological and rule-based approaches to the generation and evaluation of different schematic propositions emphasising functional and environmental performance and regulatory compliance. You will then develop these ideas in a single, synthesised detailed design proposition. Throughout the unit, you will develop skills in communication techniques emphasising graphic conventions and the structuring of images, text and oral presentations for clarity and consistency. The unit also introduces you to object-based modelling processes and their use in design through testing and evaluating building performance.
