Architecture requires active involvement and critical use of a range of knowledge. This unit is integrated with the design studio and history and theory in design studio in an integrated (cap-stone) project. The unit focus is on the expansion of structural and constructional knowledge with specific reference to loadbearing masonry and light timber framing methods appropriate to medium-rise buildings with complex programmes. Strategizing and rationalization of structural and constructional systems are considered with specific reference to applied design parameters and within the confines of standard Australian building practices. Detailing and detail documentation is explored and its relationship to broader design thinking examined.

The unit also introduces students to professional practice and management and aims to provide students with an introduction to, and an understanding of, sound practice management as it relates to both architecture and design. It also investigates the practical application and resulting likely implications of relevant law, in terms of the specific carrying on of such practice management, by architects and designers.
