Igneous Petrology and Geochemistry KEA304
Introduction
This unit provides a systematic description and quantitative interpretation of magmatic rocks within a plate tectonic framework. Lectures cover an introduction to igneous petrology and geochemistry, and key aspects of the mineralogy, textures, classification and origin of the main types of igneous rocks. Laboratory work includes practical exercises aimed at mastering tools and techniques used in igneous petrology and geochemistry, tutorials on optical mineralogy, and hand sample and microscope investigations of igneous and rocks. Topics covered in the first part of the course introduce the necessary tools and techniques. The remainder of the course will apply these methods to a survey of the major igneous rock associations on Earth.

Note
Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Key Dates

---|---|---|---|---|
Semester 1 | 21/2/2022 | 22/3/2022 | 11/4/2022 | 29/5/2022 |
* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (refer to How do I withdraw from a unit? for more information).
Unit census dates currently displaying for 2022 are indicative and subject to change. Finalised census dates for 2022 will be available from the 1st October 2021. Note census date cutoff is 11.59pm AEST (AEDT during October to March).
Learning Outcomes
- understand the major magmatic rock associations, their mineralogy, classification, and their associations with particular tectonic settings.
- understand the key processes that control the evolution and emplacement of igneous rocks, including partial melting, fractional crystallisation and crustal contamination and mixing processes.
- understand principles of deriving mineral formulas and normative mineralogy from the compositions of igneous rocks and minerals.
- learn simple graphical and computational/numeric methods for using geochemical and isotopic data to determine the age, evolution and petrogenesis of igneous rocks.
- confidently use a petrographic microscope to interpret the mineralogy and texture of the major associations of igneous rocks, and develop reasoning based on evidence from mineralogy and chemistry of rocks.
- basic knowledge of the effect of alteration on the compositions of igneous rocks.
- enhance scientific literacy via writing succinct and accurate descriptions of thin sections of igneous rocks.
