Introduction

Comprises lectures and practical classes covering tectonics, key events in the Earth's evolution, and volcanology. The principles of compressional, extensional and transform tectonics will be presented. The unit will show how modern models of major Earth processes are supported by data from geophysics, petrology and volcanology. The volcanology portion of the course focuses on volcanoes that are characteristic of different tectonic settings, and the links between magma compositions, volcano type and eruption styles. The unit also involves a 6-day field excursion that precedes the beginning of semester 1. The field trip examines the geology of western Tasmania and provides practical experience in mapping and interpreting complex outcrops. Daily field tests, a mapping exercise and a major field report are included in the course assessment.

This unit is designed to bring students' knowledge of these topics up to graduate level, adequate for school teaching and for continuation into 4th year (Honours), which is now recognised as the minimum professional level of training. This unit is required for undertaking Honours in General Geology, Marine Geosciences and Geophysics, and desirable for Honours in Environmental Geology and Economic geology.

A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units.
