Geological Mapping KEA310

Introduction
This unit provides students with an understanding of, and practical experience with, modern methods for geological mapping. It includes a ten-day field trip to the Broken Hill region in New South Wales prior to the commencement of semester. On the field trip, students collect data to produce fact and interpretative geological maps, cross sections and stereographic projections. Practical exercises during semester provide the opportunity for further analysis of structural data and rock samples from the mapping areas. Students synthesise the results of their field- and classroom-based investigations to produce a report on the geological history of the mapping areas.
Lectures and practicals cover key aspects of structural geology, metamorphic petrology and the application of geophysical techniques to geological mapping. In both the classroom and the field, this unit emphasises fundamental principles of structural geology and metamorphic petrology relevant to resolving the geological histories of complexly deformed and metamorphosed regions. Students also gain experience in the collection and interpretation of geophysical data to assist geological mapping (e.g. magnetics, gravity, radiometrics).
This unit is an essential course component for those students who intend to become professional geoscientists and is a prerequisite unit for all Honours streams in Earth Sciences.

Learning Outcomes
- Acquire (i.e. measure/describe/record), analyse/process and interpret geological and geophysical information relevant to the production of geological maps.
- Produce a coherent, appropriately referenced, scientific report (in this case a report on the geological development of the Broken Hill mapping areas), based on a review of relevant scientific literature, and a synthesis of field and laboratory data observations and analysis.
- Explain current scientific theories and techniques* relevant to the production and interpretation of geological maps (*specifically for the fields of structural geology, metamorphic petrology and geophysics).
