Introduction

This unit focuses on geoenvironmental issues that relate to how human activities can affect geological materials, and problems that can arise from such interactions. This unit strongly focusses on i) the environmental impacts of mining and associated management challenges; and ii) geophysical characterisation of inorganic and organic contaminants (in a hydrogeology context) and explores related remediation strategies. This course will also introduce geometallurgy and highlight the importance of adopting a predictive approach to resource development, mineral processing and metal extraction using mineralogy.

  • identify how major acid-forming minerals (i.e., sulfides) can react under surficial conditions and how this can cause geoenvironmental problems associated with mine waste disposal facilities.
  • understand which remediation options are commonly used and gain knowledge on new remediation technologies that are available for mine impacted environments with a focus on circular economy and sustainable mining principles.
  • design and implement predictive geoenvironmental assessments focussed on minimising the impacts of future mine waste using a range of geochemical and mineralogical tools and geometallurgical datasets.
  • evaluate surface and groundwater contamination issues using a combination of geochemical and geophysical techniques.
