Hobart, Launceston, Cradle Coast

Note:

As part of the KGA major this unit is essential for students interested in the conservation and management of natural landscapes. It is a field-based unit, requiring students (and staff) to stay on site remote from any campus for 8 days during late November-early December. Transport to and from the venue will be provided from both Launceston and Hobart.

Introduction

Effective management of the natural environment is one of the most important challenges of our time. This field-based unit develops the abilities to describe and assess the conservation status of natural terrestrial ecosystems. Through field data collection, lectures, and a variety of group activities, students will learn how to assess, and measure natural environments. Students will become practised in the skills of vegetation and animal surveys, identification methods, the use of global positioning systems (GPS), topographic surveying and mapping of landscapes; measurement of local climates, interpreting soil profiles, data analysis and scientific report writing.
