This unit through the Dean’s Summer Scholarship program provides students with an opportunity to be engaged in a research or design project in a laboratory or field setting within a STED Discipline of Architecture, Computer Science, Design, Geography, Information Technology or Spatial Sciences. The aim of the unit is to provide an experience that will immerse students in the culture of a research or design group in STED and enable students to gain insights and skills associated with working effectively, under supervision, on an authentic research or design activity. The project outputs will be presented as a poster or equivalent to an academic audience.
This Introduction to Research and Design Experience unit consists of 6 to 8 weeks (ca. 300 hours) project activity, or equivalent. It is restricted to students who have received a Dean’s Summer Scholarship.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units.

1. Plan a research or design project in response to a predetermined problem in STED supported by relevant information.
2. Implement a predetermined design and method to undertake a project under the guidance of a supervisor
3. Complete a research or design project through working effectively, responsibly, safely and ethically in an individual or team context
4.Accurately record and interpret scientific or design data derived from own investigation or provided by others
5. Communicate your research or design project results as results diagrams or tables or equivalent, with interpretation of how they contribute to the project problem.
The unit consists of 6 to 8 weeks (ca. 300 hours) project activity, or equivalent.
Tuition pattern will be discussed by the unit coordinator with students, as it will vary with the duration of the study period in which the unit is undertaken.
