Ecosystem Conservation KGA508

Introduction

The conservation of nature needs to occur at the landscape scale as well as within protected areas. Landscapes can be wilderness areas, rural areas with highly varied land use or urban areas. Whatever their type, there are landscape processes, both natural and cultural, that need to be managed to ensure conservation. A large number of organisations, such as Australia’s Natural Resource Management Boards, have conservation at a landscape scale as a major mission. You will learn about the roles of connectivity and fragmentation in influencing biotic patterns, landscape and political processes relevant to the conservation of rare or threatened, species, communities and landforms, and the ways in which landscapes can be planned and managed to benefit the conservation of nature. If you are interested in working with people to conserve nature at a broad scale, you will enhance your knowledge by undertaking this unit.
