Note:

This is one of two 25% thesis units: KGA742 and KGA743. Students will be enrolled by the Course Coordinator in both of these units; in one semester for those undertaking the research full time, or in two consecutive semesters for those undertaking the research part time.

Students enrolling will commence 3 weeks prior to the normal commencement of Semester 1 or Semester 2. The submission date for the thesis will be the last day of the semester in which the candidate is enrolled in KGA743.

Introduction

Research and project management skills are core professional competencies. Undertaking a thesis as part of your Masters will equip you with the experience needed to undertake research independently or as part of a team, and the skills to design and manage projects utilising available resources and time. It is also essential if you are considering doing a PhD. In this unit, you will begin work on a research project that will span KGA742 Research Thesis A and KGA743 Research Thesis B. With an expert supervisor you will define a problem or hypothesis that will form the basis of your project and develop a project plan that outlines how you will address this in a thesis. This includes developing critical knowledge and skills in methodologies and methods appropriate to your research field, topic and project. These may be quantitative, qualitative and/or spatial. The combination of KGA742 Research Thesis A and KGA743 Research Thesis B comprise one quarter (50% of 200%) of the requirements for the Master of Planning (K7P), Master of Applied Science (Environmental Management and Spatial Science; K7J4) and Master of Protected Area Governance and Management (K7E). The research must address a topic of significance for environmental management/spatial science (K7J4 candidates), planning (K7P candidates) or protected areas (K7E candidates).

Across KGA742 and KGA743, students are requires to submit a thesis of approximately 15,000 words (100%) and complete two compulsory ungraded tasks: a project proposal (approximately 2,000 words) and a seminar presentation (15 minutes).
