Introduction

This unit focuses on the nature of systems design, implementation and testing as phases within the systems development process. The unit develops practical skills in designing, implementing and testing desktop computer programs, focusing on ones having graphical user interfaces that communicate with data sources. Modern software tools and techniques to support designing (such as UML), programming (such as C# and pair-programming), and testing (such as use-case based testing) will be utilized. Students will explore the concepts of object oriented modelling and programming and also the agile development methodology. By the end of the unit, students will know the principles of how to design, implement and test a system from a requirements specification, and have the knowledge and skills required to conduct a user-centred approach to the main tasks typically required in these phases.

For students who do not have a prior programming or data management background there will be some introductory modules available on programming, SQL and XML. All students are provided with a series of practical introductory programming classes.

Lectures in weeks 1, 6, 8 and 11; 3hr online modules on average weekly; up to 3 additional 3hr online modules for students without prior programming, SQL or XML knowledge; 2hr laboratory classes weekly; and 1hr introductory programming laboratory classes in weeks 2-7.

Assessment

50% exam, 50% in-semester (2 assignments worth 15% and 25%; 10% in-class assessments during introductory programming laboratory classes)
