Pasture and Animal Science KLA211
Introduction
The unit introduces the science behind pasture production and management and the link between pasture or other feedstuffs on animal digestion, feed and nutrient utilisation and productive performance. In the practical classes, students are given the opportunity to perform pasture assessment, assess the digestive system of ruminants, and experience the methods used to determine meat quality. The practical sessions also give the students practice applying the theoretical knowledge about animal health and nutrition learned during the lectures to practical situations.

Learning Outcomes
- Classify the botanical composition of a given pasture to at least genus level
- Discuss the role of the inter-relationship between pasture and nutrients with respect to ruminant nutrition
- Present and interpret data from the scientific literature and/or experimental data in an appropriate manner in the area of pasture and animal science
- Characterise the key elements of sustainable grazing systems
