Applied Environmental Microbiology KLA398

Introduction

The unit covers the basic principles of environmental microbiology, microbial diversity and evolution. Lectures are provided on the latest techniques used in microbial ecology including coverage of advanced methods in functional analysis and genomics. A focus is placed on the role of microbes in major ecosystems including soil and the oceans and includes lectures on global cycling of nitrogen, carbon, phosphorous, sulphur and iron. Students will learn about microbial processes in anaerobic systems as well as how microbes interact and communicate. Several lectures are devoted to how microbes are applied in a practical sense in the environment and in industry. These topics include bioremediation of contaminated land and water; biocontrol in agriculture; utilisation of microbes to form natural products or as catalysts in industrial systems.
