Pasture and Animal Science KLA438

Introduction
The unit introduces the science behind pasture production and management and the link between pasture or other feedstuffs on animal digestion, feed and nutrient utilisation and productive performance. In the practical classes, students are given the opportunity to perform pasture assessment and experience the methods used to determine the quality of feeds. The practical sessions also give the students practice applying the theoretical knowledge about animal health and nutrition learned during the lectures to practical situations.

Learning Outcomes
- Classify the botanical composition of a given pasture to at least genus level
- Discuss pasture and nutrients with respect to ruminant nutrition and relate nutrition to digestive physiology, anatomy, animal performance and product quality
- Present, interpret and synthesise data in an appropriate scientific manner and form a realistic hypothesis supported by scientific literature in the area of pasture and animal science
- Apply the key elements of sustainable grazing systems to animal production
