Agribusiness Value Chains and Supply Chains KLA503
Introduction
Value chain and supply chains are both concerned with the same activities: creating goods or services and delivering them to a customer. However, value chains describe this process in terms of how each business and its components adds value for the end-point consumer, and considers ways to increase this value, with the overall goal of increased business competitiveness. Whereas supply chains consider the manufacture and supply of goods very much from an operational perspective, and how to deliver goods to the customer most efficiently. So, value chains are a business management concept or strategy, but one that few businesses make use of, whereas supply chains are a practical operational component of most functioning businesses. In this unit, you will gain an understanding of the key concepts in agribusiness value and supply chain management and apply these to your business. You will compare value chain principles against traditional supply chain thinking, explore the factors that impact them, and discover how this knowledge can be used for gaining a sustainable competitive advantage. In this unit, you will be introduced to: 1. The differences between ‘value’ and ‘supply’ chain concepts. 2. Value chain and Supply chain management and structure. 3. The flow of information in value and supply chains. 4. Mapping your value and supply chains. 5. Improving your value and supply chains.
