This unit is classed as a restricted unit and available to Master of Applied Science students.
The focus of this unit is on advanced topics of plant disease biology and management. Concepts will be illustrated with diseases caused by viral and virus-like agents, phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi in agricultural and horticultural systems. Topics include infection biology, host resistance, disease transmission, disease epidemiology and detection of pathogens. Practical sessions are project-based including group work and one field trip.

- Interpret plant disease outcomes based on complex interactions of epidemiological variables, for fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens
- Evaluate plant disease assessment and management strategies in agriculture and horticultural systems
- Differentiate the types of plant-pathogen interactions, including pathogen-vector interactions, which lead to plant disease
- Demonstrate advanced practical skills in selected topics of plant pathology and communicate complex scientific information
