Plant Pathology KLA612

Introduction

The focus of this unit is on advanced topics of plant disease biology and management. Concepts will be illustrated with diseases caused by viral and virus-like agents, phytopathogenic bacteria, fungi and nematodes in agricultural and horticultural systems. Topics include infection biology, host resistance, disease transmission, disease epidemiology and detection of pathogens. Practical sessions are project-based including group work and two field trips.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret plant disease outcomes based on complex interactions of epidemiological variables, for fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens
  • Evaluate plant disease assessment and management strategies in agriculture and horticultural systems
  • Differentiate the types of plant-pathogen interactions, including pathogen-vector interactions, which lead to plant disease
  • Demonstrate advanced practical skills in selected topics of plant pathology and communicate complex scientific information
