Introduction
The unit provides Master of Applied Science students with knowledge of soil science including: developing the candidates ability to undertake chemical and physical soil analyses and interpret soil analytical data for management of soil related environmental management problems. Issues covered include: management of salinity, soil drainage, soil water retention and measurement for plant growth, soil erosion management and control, and soil chemical properties and processes.
The practical component provides students with skills involved in field description and sampling of soil profiles. The soil profiles are then analysed as a class exercise and interpretations and soil management plans are developed. Field trips to examine land use conflicts, soil erosion management and controlled traffic farming are also undertaken.
Students will also be expected to develop laboratory and field based record keeping and reporting skills.
In addition to general course content, students are expected to undertake prescribed reading at an advanced level on recent developments in soil science and to incorporate this knowledge in their theory examination.
